The University Program Board's second Spot Night of the year has enough potential to be one of the semester's best, featuring the young Philadelphia-based indie rock act Drink Up Buttercup. The line that ties their Yep Roc debut Born and Thrown on a Hook together is that there hardly is such a line, allowing for the band to explore a variety of styles. Where the end result for a less skilled band would turn out messy, Drink Up Buttercup prove themselves remarkably apt at maintaining quality throughout this ambitious, little record.

The ramshackle oompah behind "Sosey and Dosey" recalls Man Man while songs like the lightly psychedelic "Pink Sunshine" and "Young Ladies" evoke The Small Faces at their most whimsical. Adding to the band's stylistic palette are multi-faceted leadoff track "Seasickness Pills," acoustic jaunt "Lovers Play Dead," and album highlight, the driving, energetic "Even Think."

Although Drink Up Buttercup are new to the scene, they've already earned acclaim from the likes of The New York Times, NPR's All Songs Considered, and All Music Guide. Their hometown has been kind to them as well, with Philadelphia Weekly naming Born and Thrown on a Hook the best album of 2010. Their music has also attracted the attention from the likes of one Andrew W.K., who remixed "Even Think" for the song's B-side.

In accordance with Spot Night's ambitions of spotlighting promising young bands, Drink Up Buttercup is sure to be one of the most formidable among them, and they promise to deliver a show full of quality songs, ample noise, and banging on garbage lids.

UPB's Spot Night takes place every Wednesday starting at 9 p.m. in the Spot in Lower Level Leutner. Evening specials always include discounted food, drinks, and of course free music.
