Hitting the Spot: Robert Francis

Local met west coast music two weeks ago for the semester's first Spot Night of the year. Cleveland's own Mike St. Jude and the Valentines opened the show with a set of original tunes, and even a Lou Reed cover. The band, particularly the lead singer, put forth a lot of energy to enliven their performance. They will also be performing again this Saturday at WRUW's Studio-A-Rama Festival.

The headlining act mellowed out the room with a more folksy set. Singer-songwriter Robert Francis and his band have been promoting Francis' newest, self-titled album coming out nationwide Oct. 20th. The band's set featured newer material, however a few audience members requested that Francis play one or two of his acoustic songs. After the band played their last song, Francis invited the acoustic fans to the lot outside the Spot (where it was quieter) where he played his song "Little Girl." The endearingly shy Francis was able to showcase his vocals with arguably the best-performed song of the night, ending this Spot Night on an intimate and friendly note.

Next week's Spot Night will feature Those Darlins, an all female alt country trio. Those Darlins have been receiving much positive attention from critics of major music magazines such as Rolling Stone and Spin, which suggests that this band is worth a trip to the Spot this Wednesday.
