In the fashion world, what goes around, comes around. Trends from past seasons are always being reworked and recycled to help create a new season's signature looks, and spring 2009 is no different. In recent years, designers have taken to revisiting the 1980s and taking some of the best and most popular trends from that decade and using their influence in their new lines. While we will never, ever advocate the oversized t-shirt, big shoulder pads, or (God forbid) acid wash jean jackets, we will admit that '80s fashion had a few redeeming qualities, and when used in moderation, can be a great way to look chic this spring.

Bright colors are always in during spring, but this year, designers like Louis Vuitton and Michael Kors are bringing back neon. It's difficult to use the words "neon" and "subtle" in the same sentence, but we want to warn you not to overdo neon-colored clothing, unless you want to look like you were attacked by Madonna's back-up dancers. Instead, choose one solid neon piece - a top, a pair of heels, or a piece with a small neon pattern, like a bag or jacket, to incorporate neon colors into your wardrobe.

Men who are ready to get their '80s on have many options. First, the "preppy" look will always be in style: light, bright polo shirts in pinks, blues, and yellows, along with sweater vests and anything with an argyle pattern will get you back to the '80s faster than you can say "Michael J. Fox." Other options for gentlemen include fitted v-neck tops, as well as leather bomber jackets. In denim, loose, relaxed-fit jeans, an homage to the much more tragic parachute pant, are in for 2009.

Ladies, we've been seeing leggings for a few seasons now, and it looks as though they're here to stay. Leggings were all over the runway this year, and paired with a skirt, dress, or (if you're feeling daring) a pair of shorts, leggings are a great way to add an extra layer and a little more detail to an outfit. Be careful, though: leggings are not pants. Leggings are an accessory, and if you leave your room with leggings and a shirt, it's not our fault if you're picked up for indecent exposure - you weren't wearing pants.

Speaking of accessories, the ultimate '80s accessory for this season are aviator sunglasses. We'll be honest, we totally love aviators. Our parents couldn't get enough of Top Gun-era Tom Cruise in his aviators in 1986, and today, we just can't get enough of Andy Samberg on his boat, rocking aviator sunglasses. Aviator sunglasses are the fastest and easiest way to add a little bit of '80s flair to any outfit.

The 1980s were all about being big, having fun and getting noticed, so welcome a little bit of '80s style into your wardrobe. Grab your aviators and put on some neon, and head down to Leutner to enjoy a little bit of Journey. Don't stop believin', boys and girls, the '80s are back!
