Cape Verde is a small republic consisting of an archipelago off of the west coast of Africa that has its own particular culture. The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is hosting the first installment of the Cleveland Museum of Art's Viva! & Gala Around Town series, Lura: The Music of Cape Verde. Lura will bring the island's eclectic brand of traditional African music, French Afro-pop, and Brazilian rhythms to a new Cleveland audience. Time: 7:30 p.m. Cost: Public: $34. Cleveland's premier improvisational comedy troupe, Something Dada is celebrating its 14th birthday with a blowout bash. The group, which has been performing regularly at the Tower Press Building in downtown Cleveland, is determined to make this show extra special, with a meal included in the admission and an auction of items from local businesses. Time: Doors open at 8 p.m., show starts at 9 p.m. Cost: $20. Location: Tower Press Building (1900 Superior Ave.). Info: www.somethingdada.com
Monday, Oct. 20

Rock group Minus the Bear released their third full-length LP, Planet of Ice in the summer of 2007, and they are still touring in support of this strong release. The indie band, notable for their use of complex time signature changes and technical guitar work, have also recently compiled an EP of acoustic versions of their songs, sold only on their tour. The New Year and the Uglysuit are slated to open. Time: 8 P.M. Cost: $18. Location: The Grog Shop. Info: www.grogshop.gs

Wednesday, Oct. 22

Hot on the heels of their debut album, Talking Through Tin Cans, The Morning Benders are playing The Spot this coming Wednesday. The band has recently received accolades from the likes of Spin Magazine and the LA Times and performed with the likes of Death Cab for Cutie and Yeasayer as well as former Spot Night bands MGMT and Ra Ra Riot. Now, they're ready to bring their sunny indie pop to the campus of Case Western Reserve University. Time: 9:30 p.m. - 11:30 p.m. Cost: Free. Location: The Spot. Info: upb.case.edu
