Ode to the Cubbies

No, no way, how could happen to us in '08
100 years later, it had to happen for it was fate

We looked strong from the beginning and wouldn't look back
This was to be the year we got back on track.

The team started off average as we played in the cold
But we bore down when needed, as our boys fit into a mold.

Our 3-4-5 was as vicious as ever,
And our pitching was never better,

Dempster's gems at home were something to admire,
And thank the baseball gods we didn't depend on Prior.

At the break it was impressive, we had All-Stars galore,
But no one could expect what was in store.

We surged out of the gate, the second half was ours,
Players went home after day games, instead across the street to the bars.

We were planned, we were focused, Sweet Lou had us believing
That this just might be the year we stop the bleeding.

We clinched the Central, were set for the playoffs,
Jim Hendry did not worry about the recent layoffs.

Then Big Z, our stopper, our rock, the human yo-yo
Went out and tossed his first career no-no

It's playoff time and I feel like I've been shot by cupid
But boy, oh boy, do I now feel stupid.

I bragged, I gambled, I bet my dignity on the Cubbies,
But now I have lost it all to my closest buddies.

The damn Dodgers and in their wannabe blue,
Came into Wrigley and earned the respect they were due.

1-2-3 outs and 1-2-3 games,
Was all it took for the Cubs to be shamed

We are no longer the lovable losers,
But we still are the predictable booters

I don't believe in curses that last for all time
So I don't want to hear the billy goat, black cat, or Bartman line,

They are done, they are out,
And we are all left to pout

Our sluggers may slug and our pitchers may pitch,
But no matter what we still have a reason to…be upset.

Oh Cubs, oh Cubs, my love will never waiver, but my needs are dire,
Please, please, please, win the World Series before I expire.

There is always next year.
