The rivalry with fellow UAA school Carnegie Mellon University runs deep. The schools annually compete academically and in all sports, and in a few cases more is on the line than bragging rights. In football, the rivals compete in the Academic Bowl, where a trophy is presented to the winning school. In track and field, the schools battle for the Obelisk Trophy.

The Spartans hosted the second-annual Spartan Duel against Carnegie Mellon. Carnegie Mellon won the inaugural matchup last year, so the Spartans came into the duel seeking redemption. In the Spartan Duel, the men's and women's team scores are combined and the team with the most total points is awarded the Obelisk Trophy.

The Case women dominated, winning with a score of 86 compared to Carnegie Mellon's 40. The men's score was much closer, and actually came down to the last event of the day. The Case men's 4 x 400 meter team, made up of Ben Manekin, Brett Beaugureau, Jim Mather, and Ty Shaffer, won as the men's team pulled off the victory 64 to 63. With a total team score greater than Carnegie Mellon's, the Spartans won the Obelisk Trophy for the first time in its short history.

"Winning the Spartan Duel says a lot about our team" said senior Matt Kamalsky. "Carnegie Mellon won the UAA two years ago and always has a quality team. This meet was also important in building team camaraderie."

"It was great to see everybody step up for this competition. Most kids hit a [personal record] on Saturday. We all pushed each other to do better and it was exciting to get that Obelisk back in our trophy case," said senior captain Erin O'Shea, who also set a PR in the 55-meter dash. Though the Spartans are a young team, they certainly dominated across the board: freshman Valoryn Whitelock finished first in the 55-meter hurdles, sophomore Nataija Brown won the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, sophomore Kayla DeVault won the pole vault, and sophomore Amanda Kline won the weight throw.

"This meet definitely showcased what we can do at the conference meet in March," said O'Shea. That meet is the most important meet of the indoor season for the Spartans. The Spartans are in action next on Friday when they travel to Baldwin- Wallace College.
