A great winter coat is the most important cold weather essential. Splurging on a timeless piece is worthwhile because you'll wear it every day, and it can add elegance to any outfit. This season's coat trends show classic basics, but playful embellishments can add personality to a simple silhouette. If you want to add some texture to a basic wool coat, but don't want to overdo it, then try a frosted wool blend look. I love this style in neutral creams and browns because the mix of lighter tones and darker tones woven together expresses a sense of warmth. For a vintage look, try a cropped sleeve style and pair it with some high heeled black boots and long black gloves. Think Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's for some inspiration.
If you are a bolder lady with a desire for color, then a bright plaid is the look for you. There is absolutely no rule that you have to wear dark colors in the winter and stretching the boundaries is what makes great fashion. Don't be afraid of purples and greens, but stick to simple silhouettes if you are going with a print that pops. A basic wool, double-breasted peacoat works best in the winter months. Deep, warm colors like plum and forest green will add light to these dreary months without looking out of place. Check out Nordstrom's Sashimi double-breasted patterned peacoat in plum for a steal, or Marc by Marc Jacobs' checked wool-blend long coat for a splurge.
Are you tired of the standard coat cut and want to try something a bit more interesting? This season's slouchy, wrap style is something to praise. The loose fabric and tie belts create a perfect harmony between chic and comfort. The flowing shape looks amazing with skinny jeans or tights and adds a bohemian elegance that will be sure to have heads turning.
If you are a flirty girl like me, then you will love this year's ruffle collars shown by designers like Valentino and Dior on the runway. I don't mean that you have to look like the Swan Princess, but with a few sewing tricks, a ruffled collar can demonstrate the pure essence of elegance. I love Cinzia Rocca's pearl shawl collar found at Neiman Marcus. The color is perfect for this time of year, and the ruffling gives it that extra je ne sais quoi. When you are picking out a coat with ruffle embellishments, steer clear of sheer fabrics like lace and netting. Urban Outfitters carries some great ruffled looks that pair nicely with skinny black pants and delicate flats.
Fur embellishments were all over the runway this year, and while I don't condone buying real fur, going faux can be just as fabulous. I do not recommend buying a full-length faux fur coat, because regardless of how you wear it, it will look cheap. Smaller collar and cuff embellishments make even the simplest coat appear runway ready. Target has some great options that are extremely affordable and trendy. Just add some leather gloves, pumps, and a fierce attitude for a vogue-approved ensemble.
Regardless of your style or budget, there is a coat out there for you. Not only will these styles be sure to keep you toasty in these winter months, but they'll keep you looking stylish as well. So toss out that puffy parka and opt for a more fashion forward look this season.
