The women's basketball team lost its season opener on Monday, 70-65, at Washington & Jefferson College. The Spartans will travel back to Pennsylvania this weekend for the University Athletic Association/Ohio Athletic Conference Challenge. They open up with John Carroll University tonight at 6 p.m.

The Spartans trailed the first 16 minutes of the game until a junior guard Caitlin Henry's jumper put them up, 25-23, with 5:46 left in the first half. But the Spartans turned the ball over 11 times and shot just 32 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes as they trailed by six, 37-31, at the intermission.

The Presidents pushed their lead to 10 points early in the second half before sophomore forward Erin Hollinger's layup at 12:23 brought the Spartans to within one, 46-45, but that's as close as it got. Hollinger finished the night with a game-high 16 points.

Freshman guard Evy Iacono added 15 points in her collegiate debut.
