This year, CWRU was recognized as one of the most vegetarian-friendly campuses in the nation, nominated for PETA's annual contest along with 31 other veggie-loving colleges. 2009's Most Vegetarian-Friendly College Contest pitted Case against Oberlin College in first round competition. Oberlin was declared the winner through public vote, which ended on Nov. 2, and will move on to the second round of the competition, facing off against Northwestern University. Voting for the second round of the competition is now open and will end on Nov. 9. PETA will name the winner of its contest on Nov. 23. Still in the running is last year's winner American University who will face off against University of Pennsylvania and last year's runner-up Wesleyan University, who is facing off against Smith College.
This is the first time that Case has been nominated for the PETA contest, now in its fifth year running. The nomination was based both on the university's vegetarian and vegan offerings, as well as their sustainable and socially responsible food practices. Though the university did not advance to the second round, Beth Kretschmar, marketing manager for Bon Appetit on campus, said that they were very pleased with Case's inclusion in this year's contest. And since Oberlin's dining services are also run by Bon Appetit, look for Case to take a few hints from their first round opponent and come back as a strong contender for next year's contest.
