Last week may have been a tough (and windy) one to watch for Spartan fans who traveled to Chicago to watch the game, where the score remained extremely close upon entering the fourth quarter. There was, in reality, nothing to fear, as the offense stepped up and put up 14 points while the defense locked down and allowed a mere three points in the fourth quarter, making the final score to 38-24, with the well-deserved victory going to the Spartans. This week may present a similar challenge with the 5-3 Carnegie Mellon University Tartans, while Case struggles with finding their groove once again, at a time when they remain in the top 10 at the No. 9 spot on d3football.com. The Spartans will be forced to show their hand early in the game, but will likely dominate on both sides of the ball and give parts of the offense a little room to work with.

Coming off of a close win (21-13) against Washington University, the Tartans will step on the field with heads high and ready to play some smash-mouth football. The level of discipline or talent in this team has not been on par with the Case team in many recent years, but is a few degrees off, giving the Spartans a much-needed challenge before they, if all goes well, enter the playoffs and face much tougher teams. CMU cannot really boast about their schedule and its results so far, considering they just barely won against recognizable foes such as Kenyon College, Washington University, Ohio Wesleyan, and Grove City, as well as losing to Hobart and Allegheny by rough margins.

Statistically, the Tartans top every one of their opponents in most categories except their passing offense, which has been lacking due to the performance of senior quarterback Phil Pantalone and his receiving corps, making up a minute total of just over 800 yards so far this season. The Tartans rushing offense has performed more than admirably, putting up 1700 yards and at least 180 yards per game as of yet. This is mainly due to the separation of responsibility among the rushing corps, dividing between sophomore running back Chris Garcia and junior fullback Justin Pratt, as well as a few other up-and-coming freshman running backs, who CMU seems to be farming for. Defensively, the Tartans have been allowing fewer points from their opponents than their offense has cumulatively scored, indicating a decent performance by the interior and the linebackers.
