$1 million of Mather Alumnae Association gift will go to Center for Women
Issue date: 11/21/08 Section: Opinion
To the Editor:
I was delighted to see the article on the front page of last week's Observer about the Flora Stone Mather Alumnae Association and the legacy of Flora Stone Mather and the college that bore her name. You did a great job recounting the history of the college. There were two important omissions, however.
First, the Flora Stone Mather Alumnae Association has been an important philanthropic presence at the university and in the community since 1972, having donated funds for student scholarships and a variety of projects to help women and children. It isn't just recently that they have donated funds to the university.
The second omission is the fact that the largest single donation that the association plans for the $5 million that it is giving to the university is a matching gift of $1 million to the Flora Stone Mather Center for Women, established in 2002 here at CWRU. Association members worked hard to establish the center and gave us gifts of $87,000 in 2003 and $500,000 in 2005. Since the Center for Women has been in existence, we have worked side-by-side with the alumnae association on events and special projects. To obtain the $1 million match, the center must raise $1 million by May 2012.
